where to find tips from local searchers
When & where to look for Baltic Gold?
Amber is most often washed up onto the shore after strong autumn and winter storms, when the water is dense and icy. That’s why it’s a good idea to go looking for Baltic Gold during your autumn or winter seaside holiday. Like many of us, amber prefers calm, off-season beaches.
Where to look for amber on the beach itself?
Keep your eyes on the remnants dark sea bands thrown up by the waves. It’s a mix of twigs, bits of wood, seaweed, and peat-mud. That’s where, tangled in the sea mess, you’ll find gleaming pieces.
Another great moment is beach replenishment: the shoreline is expanded by pumping seabed sand ashore through pipes—ideal for finding exceptional specimens.
What to wear & what gear to bring?
First of all, you’ll need warm clothes and waterproof footwear. High rubber boots, and even better—waders—are essential.
Professionals rarely search for Baltic Gold with bare hands. They use a special sieve pan, i.e., a long-handled net shaped like a sieve. With it, you can scoop up seaweed directly from the waves before the water carries it back.
Another hit is UV flashlights. Under UV light, amber shines vivid yellow-green. Evening strolls with one mean amazing, family fun.
Where to find the largest amber pieces?
You often ask where to find amber in Poland best. For years, the best spots are around Sobieszewo Island, Mikoszewo, Jantar, and Stegna. The Vistula Spit brings in the most fossilized resin from ocean currents.
A record amber piece
For trivia lovers: a record-sized amber specimen was collected in the 19th century near Kamień Pomorski and weighed almost ten kilograms! Today we can admire impressive collections in museums, but every smaller piece you find on your own makes you just as happy.
Best amber spots, as locals see them
So where can you look for amber nearby? Our coast is known for impressive cliffs and stony beaches. Instead of heading to the most popular entrances in the city center, we recommend going toward Ostrowo or Rozewie.
Narrow stretches of beach full of stones near the outlets of small streams or around Lisiego Jaru are excellent spots. The stones hold onto sea material in which tiny amber particles are often hidden. A walk with your dog or with kids equipped with UV flashlights in these areas after dark—besides the magical views—can bring you equally magical finds.
Join the community of amber hunters
Catching the amber-hunting bug is only a matter of time. There’s a huge community of enthusiasts online. It’s worth joining local Facebook groups such as Amber Beginner Hunters Tri-City or I love amber.
Amber hunters are happy to share beach reports, so you’ll find out where there’s the most amber on the Baltic coast on a given day and which direction the wind is blowing.
On the beach, don’t hesitate to talk with people in waders carrying sieve pans. They’re usually open-minded and will tell you where to look for amber and what the sea is like right now.
